This entry is part 117 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

My dad is on keto and drinking Keto Chow for it, He passed me another update on his progress to publish on the blog:

Keto Chow has been part of my daily diet for 3 months now.  It tastes great, is easily carried (even on airplanes,) and is very convenient.  My recent trip to Hawaii worked very well with Chow as my main food everyday (2 out of 3 meals a day) for 12 days straight.
Some people think a low-carb diet means low strength and fatigue.  I’ve had no problems keeping up my energy with Chow. I recently wanted to capture the beauty of the rugged Na Pali coast on the island of Kauai and found the only route was a treacherous hike into the jungle and over volcanic boulders.  I have never seen so many muddy adults on the trail —most were 20 and 30-something!  Many were falling down left and right, but I managed the 800 ft elevation gain (in 1/2 mile) and captured this incredible sunset image. The salt spray from the ocean waves, crashing on the shores below, was so heavy even at this elevation that I had to wipe my glasses twice to see my way!

Day 033 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

This entry is part 29 of 81 in the series 100 days of keto
  • Weight: 209.1
  • Blood ketones: <0.1 mmol/L

Spent a large portion of the day at the RootsTech conference filling glasses up with ice so they could be filled with soda. We joke that we’re really putting our training and skills to use. I’m going to guess that the 8-9 8 ounce glasses of diet Dr. Pepper I drank yesterday had some effect since my weight is up and my ketones are non-measurable =( Today I brought along a big bottle of “Clear American” soda instead, I’ve never seen it affect my progress so that should help; and unlike a fountain drink I know exactly what I’m getting and how much. Had a snickerdoodle keto chow for breakfast during the keynote and I have another in a hydroflask for lunch just like yesterday.

Day 031 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

This entry is part 27 of 81 in the series 100 days of keto
  • Weight: 208.1
  • Blood ketones: 1.3 mmol/L

Long (cold) day yesterday. Spent most of the day helping set up several booths at the Salt Palace convention center for the RootsTech conference that’s starting today. My blood ketone levels are WAY up because I did intermittent fasting for most of the day yesterday: drank a snickerdoodle keto chow while driving home, then drank another after I got home and finished the evening with left-over keto chow muffins. Not bothering with eating most of the day turned out to be a very good thing – the giant expo hall we were setting up computers in had forklifts running in and out all day so they don’t have the heat on and with the wind blowing it, you might as well be outside. With the weather being in the low 20’s that was pretty cold and I’m not as big a guy as I used to be, I even wear sweaters now. I had a jacket on but it wasn’t nearly up to the task, I even took a break to head into the bathroom and use the hand dryer to warm up my hands enough to get some feeling back in them. Ever tried plugging in 4-dimensional USB cables with numb fingers?

So while all the other guys were off to lunch, I jogged the 3 blocks back to my office cubicle, grabbed my heavy winter coat and gloves (along with coats for 3 other guys that were also unprepared) and brought them back. I’ll be bringing my coat to the expo hall today =) It was nice to not have to worry about food all day though, going to do it again today and maybe for the rest of the week – though I’m not sure, I might just skip breakfast since I’m unsure what time I’ll be heading home Thurs-Saturday.

When I got home my wife and 3 of the kids had an activity to go to so I had the remaining kids clean their rooms for a few minutes then let them watch the last episode of My Diet is Better Than Yours since one of them fell asleep during the initial broadcast. This time I was the one that fell asleep. My wife came home and took a picture (and let me sleep for a few more minutes until the 6 year old came and poked my shoulder and told me it was time to wake up); she said “you can use that for tomorrow’s post” – so I did =).

Day 025 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

  • Weight: 209.6
  • Blood ketones: 0.7 mmol/L

At my weigh-in yesterday I was down 3 lbs from the previous week, not bad. Hopefully this next week will be even better. Somebody asked what I’m using to measure blood ketones. I’m using a Nova Max glucose/ketone meter with it’s incredibly expensive ($2 each) ketone testing strips. I think if I had to do it over again I would buy testing strips for the Precision Xtra instead but this is what I have and it’s what I’m going to use.

Last night I tried making Keto Chow muffins but with some modifications to the recipe: I didn’t whip the cream, I mixed it in a blender, I added a little coconut flour. Overall it worked out extremely well and I’m going to try it again tonight but without the coconut flour and adding the powder while the blender is running (I got a couple dry clumps on the side because I didn’t get it mixing fast enough). I made 3 “meals” worth split up into 24 muffins. I ate 8, my wife ate like 5 or 6 and the kids ate most of the rest. My youngest daughter asked for another and I pointed out that she had pizza right there that I can’t eat “Ok, I’ll eat 2 more pieces and then can I have another one?” So if you had any doubt whether they’re good, don’t doubt the muffins!

  • Weight: 208.0
  • Blood ketones: 0.2 mmol/L

Weight is still coming down and I had time to run on the treadmill last night. Going to try to do that again today. Today marks the end of week 1 of my city’s weight loss program (“Mission: Slim Possible”) so I’ll be doing my first weigh in for that after work. They send out an email with the names of the 3 people who lost the most each week. Last year I was in the top 3 like 5 times (and finished 2nd overall) – I doubt I’ll be in the top 3 this first week but if I can stick to my plan and stay away from malitol and other high GI sugar alcohols I should do well the subsequent weeks.

The graph comes from “Withings” which I use to track my weight, in turn it feeds data over to Fitbit and CRON-O-meter. The App and site are free to use though they like it if you buy one of their wifi scales =) I got the WS-50 a bit over a year ago and it works well aside from randomly switching to Kilograms.

Ok, weight is coming back down, that’s good. My awesome wife helped make 12 meals of Keto Chow last night and picked Mint and the Chocolate Peanut Butter for the flavors – it’s been really a long time since I last drank the Mint Chocolate. When I was first developing Keto Chow I was using a mint chocolate flavor and kinda got “minted out”. It’s been a year and I tried one of the ones we mixed up for breakfast this morning: not bad, not bad at all. I still don’t think I’d like Cinnamon Bun but having a variety of flavors to switch around is definitely a plus.

Keto Chow in paradise

This entry is part 116 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

My parents visited Hawaii and my dad sent me some info on his experience. Bright, sunny Hawaii is a radical departure from his recent photographic work (photos of nightscapes – check out http://intothenightphoto.blogspot.com/ in several of his shots I’m the guy turning on the light to paint the scenes). He seems to really like measuring out 50g into bags ahead of time to make measuring easier:

Keto Chow and traveling is an easy combination. I wondered if airport security would question the plastic bags of powder ,  but no one has seemed concerned. I pack 50 grams of Keto Chow per small snack bag.  I even went to Arizona in December with no security problems. The insulated bottles keep my Chow the perfect temperature, even in Kauai.  Winter here is only a few degrees cooler than the Summer months but my favorite time to escape the snowy mountains of home in January.

A local snack of dry roasted macadamia nuts has been a unique and readily available treat.  Serving size, 1/4 cup.  Total carbs, 4 grams.  Dietary fiber, 2 grams.  Net carbs 2 grams, same as almonds.  Total fat, 21 grams to balance protein intake.

I forgot a measuring cup but that was a simple purchase.  Extra cream can serve as a substitute for the MCT oil for a few days,

[to simplify] ingredients.  I like to bring a variety of flavors but my favorites are:  chocolate peanut butter, rich chocolate and strawberry blast.  The wonderful smell of fresh pineapple has not even been able to convince me to break my diet.  Keto Chow is a big part of my successful quest to lose weight.

Stats
  • Male
  • Age 67
  •  Time on Keto Chow: 3 months on Feb 2nd.

Days 014 & 015 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

This entry is part 14 of 81 in the series 100 days of keto
  • Weight: 207.5
  • Blood ketones: 0.9 mmol/L

Wow, that’s a LOT of water weight! (3.5lbs) Having food with a lot of salt will do that to you I guess.

  • Weight: 206.0
  • Blood ketones: 0.2 mmol/L

There I go, back down =) Yesterday I made jello using keto chow and some sugar free jello. Put it in the fridge overnight and tried it for breakfast. Overall it turned out pretty well. I used vanilla Keto Chow and orange Jello. Not sure how other flavor combinations will turn out. I have some lime jello too.

Day 004 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

This entry is part 5 of 81 in the series 100 days of keto
  • Weight: 207.6
  • Blood ketones: 1.0 mmol/L

Totally got trolled by my scale today. For review, yesterday I was up a bit at 208.9; today I weighed myself and it said 202.4 – somehow I doubt I lost 6 lbs overnight. So I tried again, same thing, so I picked up the scale and shook it a bit. Now it said 182? OK, so finally I picked it up and stuck it in the middle of the tile…. and it finally decided to cooperate =)

Yesterday I ended up with 1 peanut butter Keto Chow and 2 banana+chocolate. People ask me frequently if Keto Chow tastes good. Last night my wife was drinking a Chocolate Peanut Butter one and our 6 year old saw it, then pled with her to let him drink the rest; which is exactly what he did. I’d say: yes Keto Chow tastes good =)

Interesting personal experience: for several months I’ve been eating Keto Chow at least 2 times a day, often 3; though on weekends it averaged 1 since we were making keto friendly food with the kids. I started 100% keto chow (with hardly anything else except diet soda) on Monday, January 4.

TMI warning!

I didn’t expect to have a run with “never trust a fart” since I was regularly consuming Keto Chow already but it may have a lot to do simply with being deep in ketosis again, I don’t know. So yes, yesterday whenever I needed to step on “barking spiders” I would do it seated. A couple times it was a false alarm, others I was happy where I was. The good news is: it appears to be going away, just like it’s supposed to. Hopefully everything will be hunky-dory today. So for future reference, if you’re having bowel problems: try eating regular keto friendly food for a meal each day.

Interview I did about Keto Chow and Ketosis

This entry is part 113 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

I linked this in another post but didn’t want it to get lost in the shuffle, so it’s getting its own post! Check out the interview at http://ieet.org/index.php/IEET/more/pellissier20160105

The interview was done via email, which was nice since it gave me time to think well about my answers and re-read them. My responses were largely completely unaltered, just some minor tense changes so it would fit an interview style. I should have added more hyperlinks =)
