Awesome results from a Keto Chow user

This entry is part 98 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

I got a great email from a Keto Chow user this afternoon, I asked permission to share it (since I’m always seeking confirmation). I’ve edited a few spelling errors but that’s it.

TL;DR Male/28 5’7″, start weight 185, hit goal weight of 130. (I’m small framed/boned).

I just wanted to thank you for this product, as it allowed me to lose 55 pounds of fat in 6/7 months (probably more since I’ve gained some muscle from new gains). It made dieting easy and quickly since I hate preparing food, and this took 5 minutes of prep for 3 meals of the day. I was doing three shakes a day for 80% of days. During this I was lifting 3-4 days a week, with no cardio, except for some hikes on the weekends.

I had many naysayers and mocking during lunch in the office, however ignored it and kept on trucking. The fact that I was never hungry was pretty amazing, compared to most other diets I’ve been on. Toward the end however, when my body-fat percentage was getting near 10% I did start to have cravings which was difficult to deal with, and which slowed down progress immensely as I found myself always snacking.

Just wanted to say thanks for the abs! haha

So there’s a lesson for all of you: when you get to 10% body fat you might get cravings. #firstworldproblems =) I have a bit to go before I hit 10% (OK a lot. I started all this at around 36% and am hovering around 25% according to my scale that does it using electricity).

11 months, DreamForce14 to DreamForce15

This entry is part 97 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

11 months ago I attended DreamForce 2014. It was really good. It was also the “the straw that broke the camel’s back” in that the sheer amount of weight I gained during the conference convinced me to make some changes and start Keto. Attached to this post is the headshot taken last year during DreamForce next to one taken yesterday. You can’t see most of my body but I weigh 60 lbs (4.3 stone, 27.2 kg) less now:

It has been interesting (food wise) to be here at the conference. I just bring Keto Chow in insulated flasks since “breakfast” is juice and bread (I could eat the butter), lunch is a tiny bit of meat with carbs that you have to stand in line for, dinner’s on your own – I figure I might as well keep going.

So anyhow, that’s 11 months down; the rest of my life to go!

Great NYTimes article by Gary Taubes

This entry is part 92 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Linky: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/30/opinion/diet-advice-that-ignores-hunger.html?_r=0

As described on Reddit:

An excellent article highlighting the differences between fat and carb restricted diets, and the aftermath when people end them, and the effect that carbs have on increased hunger.

Gary Taubes is the guy that wrote “Why we get fat and what to do about it” and “Good Calories, Bad Calories

I also found this great (older article): http://www.businessinsider.com/9-lies-about-fat-that-destroyed-the-worlds-health-2013-11

Great interview with a doctor, she explains how low carb works in simple terms

This entry is part 84 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

She’s been doing less than 20g/day of carbohydrates (Keto) for 13 years! She also does a very good comparison of her inability to tan and her tolerance for carbohydrates. Being pale and getting a sun burn doesn’t mean she doesn’t have enough will power – that’s just how her body is.

From the video description:

Nobody knows more about the practicalities of low carb than Dr. Mary Vernon. Here she explains it for you.

Dr Mary Vernon, MD, is one of the world’s foremost experts on treating obesity and diabetes with low carbohydrate nutrition. She is a practicing family physician, educates doctors on low carb and is active in and former president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (doctors specializing in treating obese patients).

199.1

This entry is part 77 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

This morning the scale hit under 200 for the first time since… well, probably 1998. For kicks I tried to take a picture but the scale was acting up and gave me numbers higher than 200. I’m going to live in denial and accept the first pronouncement. And hows about a photo? On the left you have two pictures (from the same day) taken in mid October 2014 during the “DreamForce” conference I weighed about 255 at the time. On the right you have yesterday. Before and after

Super awesome review of Keto Chow

This entry is part 75 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Every few days I check my web stats and see where people are coming from. Got a fun surprise today: http://www.insignificant.info/blog-native/2015/6/24/ketochow-diet

Includes quite entertaining commentary (make sure you click the numbered notations, I missed them the first time, they’re really funny), along with a super official “Appendix” where he ranks the different flavors. Personally I think he’s wrong about Rich Chocolate (it’s one of my favorite flavors and my biggest seller) but that’s a matter of personal taste =)

Keto+8 months=55

This entry is part 73 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Yesterday marked 8 months doing ketogenic “soylent”, and the day before that was my 20 year High School reunion. At the reunion I kept getting “wow, you look exactly the same!” probably because the organizers made us name tags that had our Senior portraits on them. If I remember correctly I was about 200 when I started my senior year and about 210 when I graduated. so technically I weighed a bit less then 20 years prior. I was really working on hitting One-derland before the reunion but didn’t quite make it =( It was nice to be the skinny(er) guy for a change. It was also nice that the dinner had keto friendly foods: Prime rib, as well as some meats and cheeses. Should have gotten a second plate of prime rib.

About a week ago I finally broke through my stall. I had been moving up and down between 206 and 211 for nearly a month. I’m thinking the likely culprit was Malitol which is a “sugar alcohol” that isn’t absorbed and used as quickly as glucose but it still eventually gets through. Other sugar alcohols are much better (Erythrotol and Xylotol) and aren’t a problem. Unfortunately most “sugar free” candy uses malitol so I stopped eating any of that and my weight started moving again.

8 months of keto

Weight progress up until today. 55.4 lbs down in 8 months.

Taken 4 days after I started Keto, weighed 257.8 lbs when I started

Weighed 202.4 lbs this morning, if all goes well I’m going to hit <200 this week!

High School

High School senior portrait. Taken back in 1994. I think I was somewhere between 200 and 210 at the time.

Effects of Keto Chow on (my) blood glucose levels

This entry is part 69 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

On on /r/keto /u/rhoymand has done a series on testing his blood sugar response to various foods (here is one on a Quest Bar). I’ve been curious what effect Keto Chow has on blood so I got a glucose meter (cheap as free!) and some test strips (holy cow, these are expensive!). Today I did a test of blood glucose levels, sampling every 15 minutes from 08:45 to 14:00 (aka 22 holes in my fingers). During this time I drank a breakfast and then a lunch bottle of Keto Chow. I had intended to start this fasting but forgot and ate some beef jerky around 8. Doesn’t seem to have had an effect on the results but I’ll probably run this again in a month or so. Here’s the result:

Red lines are when I drank a blender bottle full of Keto Chow.

The last few times I’ve had my blood checked by a lab I’ve been 79-87 mg/dL glucose while fasting. Anyhow that’s a pretty negligible change. At least in my n=1 test it looks like Keto Chow doesn’t have an appreciable effect on blood glucose levels. In case you want it, here is the raw data:

Today’s shipment will be delayed.

… due to me trying to drill a hole in my leg. I was drilling a hole in a trailer hitch and the drill bit broke. The drill with half a bit flew out of my hands and punctured my leg. Got two stitches and a tetanus shot.

Great TEDx talk by a doctor: “Reversing Type 2 Diabetes Starts with Ignoring the Guidelines”

This entry is part 59 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Last night I watched this really great presentation. She sums a lot of the concepts surrounding Keto very well. I didn’t ever get “The Diabetus” but I was heading down that path and I’m abcolutely insulin resistant, probably worse.
