New “how to prepare Keto Chow” video (6 meals)

This entry is part 93 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Had some time yesterday to make a new video on how to prepare Keto Chow. I also wanted to talk about using an insulated thermos like this 40 ounce Hydro Flask or this 16 ounce one because you can use them for when you won’t have refrigeration available. You can also use them to maintain “slushy” for hours Keto Chow made mostly with ice in a blender (think Wendy’s Frosty). Takes me about 14 minutes to make 6 meals worth in the video, it’s faster if you’re not ‘splaining stuff.

Major problem with Chocolate Peanut Butter Keto Chow…

This entry is part 83 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

I start drinking one and suddenly my blender bottle is empty and that makes me sad because I want MOAR. Breakfast and lunch today I was testing the “Peanut Flour Light 28 %” that finally arrived yesterday and both times I ended up drinking the whole thing down without even thinking about it and then it’s gone =( For those wanting to play along at home, here is the recipe.  I’ve also added it as a flavor to the weeks and samples of Keto Chow, though the weeks are on backorder while I’m waiting for more peanut flour to arrive this week (I’ll add it to days next week if it fits in the bags, it might not; the space is pretty tight without an extra 30g of stuff). The nutrition information is a combination of the detailed nutrition info I got from the manufacturer, coupled with the USDA info for peanut flour. I’ve tried 3 different ways of adding peanut to the mix: PB2, peanut flour and this new “28%” peanut flour. Of the three I like the 28% best. It has more peanut taste, has less carbohydrates and mixes up smoother with little to no chunks.

How good is Chocolate Peanut Butter Keto Chow? Let me put it this way: we were camping this last week and one of the children in our group kept complaining he was hungry. The sandwiches were gone and he wanted food. I told him “well, there’s some peanut butter chocolate keto chow in the cooler, you can have that” So he did. He drank most of it and commented that “it isn’t that bad, it’s kinda good”. From an 11 year old I’m going to consider that a ringing endorsement.

The smaller blender bottles work fine for Keto Chow

This entry is part 74 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

For kicks last night I mixed up some Keto Chow in one of the smaller blender bottles that I got a loooong time ago. Turns out they work just fine for Keto Chow with the only “issue” that you end up with a noticeably thicker mixture, which isn’t really a bad thing. I’m going to start using the two small ones I have on a regular basis, especially for when I’m going somewhere and need to bring keto chow in a cooler.

Feedback wanted: Individual Days of Keto Chow?

This entry is part 63 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

I often get questions about if I can provide multiple flavors in one week. The way I used to mix this simply wasn’t a possibility since I would measure out each week individually and dump the mixture into a bag. My response has been “if you can afford it, get multiple flavors and pull from all of them at the same time” which represents a large capital outlay. In the last month or so I picked up some mixing equipment that allows me to mix an entire 10lb bag of protein powder (5.8 weeks worth) at a time along with all the required minerals and whatnot. Among other things this allows for far greater precision in what people get in each bag: you’re getting exactly 1050 grams of powder now whereas before it could vary a few grams.

Anyhow, It occurred to me tonight that if people want multiple flavors, well I could actually accommodate that given my new methodology. It would require smaller 1-day, 1-flavor bags. There would be MOAR work involved in packaging and labeling so it would cost more to buy 7 individual days compared to a week. Probably $12 or $15 per day, depending on the flavor. It might also affect shipping costs since seven 1-day packages will likely be a bit larger in volume than a 1 week package.

I was looking at these white pouches or these brown pouches and I think they would fit a days worth. So Internets, what do you think? Would yous all be interested in the 1-day pouches or should I just stick with week packs and 1-meal samples?

If you have a couple moments, please fill out this anonymous survey (link removed).

Discovered a superpower

This entry is part 39 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Yesterday for kicks I did a little experiment and didn’t eat anything from 21:00 the night before until 18:00, so 21 hours without eating just to see what would happen. I had read that doing a ketogenic diet my body would cope with fasting extremely well, and it did. I still drank water and some zero calorie flavored things, but I didn’t get hungry at all for the entire day. Then I chowed down on some Keto chow, a bunch of cheese and some beef jerky. I’m trying it again today and so far it’s worked extremely well. The next 3 days I’m working at a trade show/conference all day and I’m not going to have ready access to refrigeration for bringing keto chow. In the past I’ve just brought an insulated lunch bag with a cold pack which has worked very well but frankly I don’t want to be bothered with transporting food and all that. Anyhow, my plan is for the next 3 days (bringing the total to 5 days): I’m going to eat when I get home and fast the rest of the day.  On Saturday that will probably take me beyond 24 hours since that’s the pack-it-up day. It feels a little weird having not eaten for so long, especially since I’m still not hungry. I didn’t have any problem at all doing the elliptical this morning either. Anyhow, it’ll be an interesting experiment.

For my own reference, I started the day yesterday at 224.7 and this morning I was 222.8.

Back from Dreamforce, added Bitcoin payment

This entry is part 36 of 39 in the series DIY Soylent

While I was gone I got a question about adding Bitcoin as a payment option. It turned out to be fairly straightforward, so that’s now an option along with Paypal.

I’m back from the Dreamforce conference! It was a week of soylent fueled learning stuff (there might have also been a few concerts and parties that I may or may not have gone to). I packed my People Chow in the GNC containers I have everywhere at my house now. I figured the TSA would be more affable if it was in a labeled container that (somewhat) represented what was inside. I didn’t have a problem at all though.

Dreamforce was great though and I added an additional certification, so now in addition to being a Certified SalesForce Administrator I’m also now a Certified SalesForce Cloud Consultant. I guess the next step is getting my Advanced Admin.

Yeah, I’ve had most of these conversations. Apparently I do… computers.

Vacationing for a week (mostly) on DIY soylent

This entry is part 35 of 39 in the series DIY Soylent

This week I’m down in Arches National Park helping my dad do a nighttime photography workshop. Mostly my job consists of running around and setting up lights and carrying stuff (though I did press the shutter for him a few times when he was light painting, I joke that I’m going to claim copyright on those ones).

[print_gllr id=636]

A week of DIYWe’re living out of a hotel room which has made for some interesting logistical issues. I brought a week worth of People Chow and a bunch of blender bottles but I still need to wash the containers. Before I left, my wife told me to bring along a small container of dish soap and I wish I would have done that along with a scrub brush. Instead I’ve had to use washcloths and whatever soap I can source. Soap is absolutely necessary because of the oil. Hot water will get much of the residue but you need something to get the oil off and only soap will do it.

As expected, eating soylent has been (except for needing to wash the containers) exceptionally convenient. It’s also forced my dad to stick to his diet since I’m not eating fast food with him (though I did make an exception and had biscuits and gravy with the workshop group this morning =). I’ve found that the kind of hiking we’ve been doing works fine with soylent, I’ve been mixing up enough containers to last me however long we’re going to be out and either mix it with a bunch of ice or refrigerate it for a few hours to get it cold enough to last. Tonight we’re going to be going up to Delicate Arch just before sunset and staying until around midnight so I’ll drink a blender bottle of people chow around 4:00pm and bring one up with me to drink while waiting for the sky to get dark enough.

This experience has been good for an additional reason: next month I’m going to be going to San Francisco for 7 days for the DreamForce conference. I’m planning to pack about 8 days worth (just in case), a little in a carry-on and the rest in a checked bag. I’m also going to bring a little soap and a brush =)

More on-location action shots with soylent

This entry is part 27 of 39 in the series DIY Soylent

I’ve kinda got a thing going with “soylent at x location” action shots. It all started with soylent at Delicate Arch and I now present:

soylent at the concert

soylent at the concert

soylent while camping

soylent while camping

soylent at the lake

soylent at the lake

It’s particularly suitable for camping since all you need is some water. No need to keep it cold until you mix it up and it takes less than a minute (normally) to mix up a meal.

Daily Storage

This entry is part 22 of 39 in the series DIY Soylent

So a recent thread on /r/soylent asked what people use to store their daily Soylent. Here is what I do. Storage Containers I’ve been consuming People Chow for over 6 months now and have 4 empty containers from GNC Mega Man Sport. Three of those are from mixing and selling People Chow over the last 3 weeks. Anyhow – The labels come off quite easily, they seal well and I can fill one up with about 7 cups of powder, making for around 7 meals. I leave one at work for lunch and have two at home (my recipe yields three 1 cup meals a day). When I only had the one container I would just take it to and from work every day. I started doing it this way right about the time I started mixing 7 days of powder at a time. For oil you can fill a container with oil and just use a measuring spoon to get the right amount out for each meal. I’ve mentioned it before but for oil I just plug my nose and down the daily oil when I’m getting ready in the morning. It’s not something that hardly anyone could put up with, I’m not recommending it.

Scooping out the powder from a bulk container instead of trying to get 1/3 from my daily bag has made preparing my lunch at work a 20 second job. A co-worker messages me that they’re leaving for lunch and all I have to do is scoop out some stuff into a blender bottle and make a quick stop at the drinking fountain to fill up on water. Yes, those are laundry detergent scoops in the picture. They’re 1/2 cup, fit into the mouth of my blender bottles easily, come to a point (making getting into corners easy), and it’s what was sitting on the counter one day when I needed a measuring scoop. So I washed it and have used it ever since.
