Day 088 – 100 days of Keto (Chow)

  • Weight: 202.9
  • Blood ketones: 0.6 mmol/L

Alright, so I made it to 46.4 hours without eating – let’s analyze how it went!

Mood and how I felt. First off, my lack of sleep yesterday was the biggest detrimental factor in the experience. If that had not happened (thanks a lot brain!) I probably would have gone longer, maybe 48 hours, maybe 72 – dunno. I don’t think I’m going to make not eating for several days something I do often since it was rather extreme (obviously); I’ll likely continue doing intermittent fasting here and there. I think I might have also been low on electrolytes since I was feeling sluggish, then again that could have been the sleep (or lack thereof).

Let’s look at the blood results. Tuesday morning (~8 hours) I was at 0.2 mmol/L of ketones in my blood. That evening (~18 hours) when I tested myself again I was up to 1.1. The next morning (~32 hours), even though the only thing I had “eaten” was two fish oil pills the night before, I had gone down to 0.9. When I came home from work that evening and tested again (46.4 hours) my ketones were all the way up to 3.5 mmol/L. After which I had two Keto Chows (Chocolate Peanut Butter), 4 pickles and a couple spoon fulls of ham soup my awesome wife had made. When I tested my blood again this morning, my levels were all the way down to 0.6. Honestly it makes no sense why it’s down again, it just further re-enforces the notion of “don’t chase ketones, just keep calm and keto on” – or don’t do what I’m doing and test your blood every day, just keep doing keto (no cheating!) and it’ll work out. You also shouldn’t get too anxious about the scale, which brings me to…

Weight results. Well, I came into this from a rather large (keto friendly) Easter dinner which loaded me up on salt and lots of water weight – all the way up to 208.3 lbs on Monday morning. By Tuesday morning (8 hours fasting while sleeping) I was only down to 207.8. lbs. By Wednesday morning I had dropped to 203.6, a slight up-tick Wednesday evening when I weighed myself again and as of this morning I was down again to 202.9 lbs. Monday – Thursday difference is 5.4lbs. Now it will be interesting to see if I can stick with it and continue going down. On a happy note, yesterday was also the weigh-in day for my city’s weight loss challenge. According to the scale there, I was down 6 lbs from the previous week. Nice.

Still down compared to last week, sticking to (almost) 100% Keto Chow is working well. I have another weigh-in for the city weight loss challenge today, shouldn’t be hard for me to be lower than last week since that was +4 lbs compared to the prior week. Even though I was terribly tired I ran on the treadmill last night. I’m still tired today but at least it’s my last day at work for this week (tomorrow I’m going to an off-site and I have Friday off; four 10s FTW!)

This morning I got a chance to test out the ketone strips on the Precision Xtra blood tester. I’m worried the ketone strips for the Nova Max aren’t being accurate so today I did both. The Precision Xtra uses a LOT more blood so to do both from the same “poke” I needed quite a bit of blood, that wasn’t fun. End result:

  • Nova Max – 0.5mmol/L
  • Precision Xtra – 0.6mmol/L

That’s close enough, looks like it might be accurate – which is a good thing since I still have about US$100 in Nova Max ketone test strips for the reamining 48 days of this “experiement”

I was reminded that I need to get running again – with the conference and crazy hours I had completely stopped. I’ll try to get that going again, should help. Water weight is going down again (or so it seems).

The scale I was using to weigh out 300g of Keto Chow powder to make 6 meals apparently was wonky on Sunday. I made 6 and noticed the mix was pretty thick, then I went to make 6 more and when the bowl was almost completely full it said it was only 100g. Reset it and it behaved but that first batch…. Yesterday I went to drink one and it was THICK. Like really thick, pudding thick, undrinkable thick (not to mention probably had 2x the iron, salt and other nutrient levels).

I ended up having to pour 6 blender bottles down the drain which left me hanging today. I didn’t have 6 clean bottles to make another batch of 6 so this morning I took the final 2 bottles to work. Our daughter that’s currently in charge of the dish washer supposedly ran it after showering last night so I’ll be able to make 12 bottles tonight (nearly the entire top rack of the dishwasher was blender bottles) but I won’t have any mixed when I get home for dinner. Might have to eat some of the left over chicken wings for dinner.

User experience: 100lbs lost doing keto in 5 months, 3 months of Keto Chow

This entry is part 119 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

Over on Reddit there’s a post by /u/ANewAccountYetAgain detailing his experiences with nutritional ketosis. He did keto before, went from 330 to 253 lbs over 6 months but stopped when depression came back and over the next 3 years gained it all back and more.

5 months ago he started keto thanks to /r/100DaysofKeto and also tried DietBet (money as a motivator can be strong =) and lost a lot. In November, 3 months ago, he started using Keto Chow.

This ended up eliminating my last two big sources of stress: money and cooking.

It’s great to read success stories, there are tons on /r/keto and some Keto Chow specific ones on /r/ketochow. I encourage you to check them out! He said I could use his pictures, even though I dislike doing things when I have permission I’ll do it anyway =)

Before

His very first DietBet weigh in photo ~353

After

Yesterday’s photo – 253lbs

The first thing that stands out to me is he seems to be taller in the new one… oh wait, it’s just a larger photo. Still, his complexion is really clear.

Spent a large portion of the day at the RootsTech conference filling glasses up with ice so they could be filled with soda. We joke that we’re really putting our training and skills to use. I’m going to guess that the 8-9 8 ounce glasses of diet Dr. Pepper I drank yesterday had some effect since my weight is up and my ketones are non-measurable =( Today I brought along a big bottle of “Clear American” soda instead, I’ve never seen it affect my progress so that should help; and unlike a fountain drink I know exactly what I’m getting and how much. Had a snickerdoodle keto chow for breakfast during the keynote and I have another in a hydroflask for lunch just like yesterday.

Busy weekend, had to mix and package enough product to last the next 8 days. Saturday I had a steak for lunch, that was yummy. I also made keto chow muffins 3x this weekend and I revised the recipe with some changes. This week will be interesting – the first part of the week I’m helping set up a technology conference so I’ll be crazy busy, then I’ll be helping run computer labs at the conference for the rest of the week. I’m planning on either using hydroflask insulated bottles or doing intermittent fasting – just don’t bother with eating and do it when I get home. I opted for the latter approach last year and it worked out just fine. Either way I’m going to do my very best to only drink Keto Chow this week, so I’ll see how it goes! To that end I mixed up the biggest batch of blender bottles I’ve ever done: 18 (that’s what the photo is). Did it 6 at a time, 3 different flavors. Should last about 4 days.

Weight is still coming down and I had time to run on the treadmill last night. Going to try to do that again today. Today marks the end of week 1 of my city’s weight loss program (“Mission: Slim Possible”) so I’ll be doing my first weigh in for that after work. They send out an email with the names of the 3 people who lost the most each week. Last year I was in the top 3 like 5 times (and finished 2nd overall) – I doubt I’ll be in the top 3 this first week but if I can stick to my plan and stay away from malitol and other high GI sugar alcohols I should do well the subsequent weeks.

The graph comes from “Withings” which I use to track my weight, in turn it feeds data over to Fitbit and CRON-O-meter. The App and site are free to use though they like it if you buy one of their wifi scales =) I got the WS-50 a bit over a year ago and it works well aside from randomly switching to Kilograms.

Keto Chow in paradise

This entry is part 116 of 139 in the series Ketogenic Soylent

My parents visited Hawaii and my dad sent me some info on his experience. Bright, sunny Hawaii is a radical departure from his recent photographic work (photos of nightscapes – check out http://intothenightphoto.blogspot.com/ in several of his shots I’m the guy turning on the light to paint the scenes). He seems to really like measuring out 50g into bags ahead of time to make measuring easier:

Keto Chow and traveling is an easy combination. I wondered if airport security would question the plastic bags of powder ,  but no one has seemed concerned. I pack 50 grams of Keto Chow per small snack bag.  I even went to Arizona in December with no security problems. The insulated bottles keep my Chow the perfect temperature, even in Kauai.  Winter here is only a few degrees cooler than the Summer months but my favorite time to escape the snowy mountains of home in January.

A local snack of dry roasted macadamia nuts has been a unique and readily available treat.  Serving size, 1/4 cup.  Total carbs, 4 grams.  Dietary fiber, 2 grams.  Net carbs 2 grams, same as almonds.  Total fat, 21 grams to balance protein intake.

I forgot a measuring cup but that was a simple purchase.  Extra cream can serve as a substitute for the MCT oil for a few days,

[to simplify] ingredients.  I like to bring a variety of flavors but my favorites are:  chocolate peanut butter, rich chocolate and strawberry blast.  The wonderful smell of fresh pineapple has not even been able to convince me to break my diet.  Keto Chow is a big part of my successful quest to lose weight.

Stats
  • Male
  • Age 67
  •  Time on Keto Chow: 3 months on Feb 2nd.
  •  Complications: none.
  •  Lost about 12 lbs, average 4 lbs a month.

Messed up and had some “sugar free” candy – I put that in quotes because it has malitol which is only marginally better than sucrose. My weight is back up to what it was when I started 100 days of keto, so that’s 2 weeks down =( I’m optimistic it’s mostly just water weight and will come off reasonably quickly so long as I stick to what I’m supposed to be eating. Here’s to getting back on track! When I only eat Keto Chow I consistently lose weight, so let’s do that for a week.

Today I have a doctor appointment, time for my 6-month recurring check-up. I have to get a blood test to check testosterone levels so I’m going to go into it fasting and figure I might as well just continue fasting until dinner since I’m going with a bunch of friends back to Rodizio Grill (since it’s still “bacon fest”). Last week I did Intermittent Fasting with Keto Chow and that worked quite well, I’ll probably do it several times next week as I’m getting back on track.

Ran on the treadmill for 40 minutes with a much harder routine than I’ve normally done. It added nearly 5000 steps to the day’s total and I barely made my goal (10,459). I didn’t have any problems with being tired or it being too much for me – the only issues I had can easily be solved: don’t drink a bunch of water right before running, have a towel to wipe off your face, make sure the light isn’t on a 30 minute timer so you have to run for 40 minutes in darkness, make sure to have multiple episodes of whatever show ready so you don’t have to settle for something boring.

Yesterday I also got a chance to watch the first 6 episodes of My Diet Is Better Than Yours. It’s interesting to see the different diets and how they compare. Some of them are completely nuts but one is interesting: the “Wild Diet”. It’s not Keto, more like Paleo but underneath it all it’s a lower carb diet that focuses on fat, fat and more fat. He does allow for some carb-y foods that have a lower glycemic index which is too much for ketosis but it’s still working wonders and doing FAR better than any of the other diets. They just finished the 6th week and Kurt, the guy doing that diet, has come down 50 lbs from 350 something (he’s nearly 6′ 6″ and in his 50’s). In the teaser for the two episodes they are airing next Thursday they had the typical overly dramatic fluff I despise about “reality” tv and inferred that some of the other contestants thought Kurt was cheating since he keeps losing weight, even when he eats stuff like bunless cheese burgers and ribs. I did laugh out loud reading a reddit post about it

I’m waiting til about week 7 when they run a cholesterol panel on Kurt and try to freak him out about the results.

Probably true. Anyway, my kids enjoyed watching it (probably because it was moving pictures on the tee vee) and kept making comments about the guy “mostly doing keto” and how he was winning. If you’re wanting to check out the show and don’t have a paid cable subscription so you can watch it on the ABC site, here’s some fun hex numbers that might help:
