MP3, what and why?
If you haven't found out already, MP3 is the file suffix used on MPEG 1 Layer 3 files. It first showed up with Macromedia's Shockwave but has since become a media format unto its self. Basicly it's just a compression format, like Jpeg, but MP3 is for Audio, not images. At CD-quality, you can put a minute of sound into just 1 MB, that's a 10:1 ratio (more or less)
I was primarily attracted to MP3 by the notion of being able to back-up 6-7 of my Audio CD's on just 1 CD-R. This was pretty important to me because I didn't want to lose all my CD's AGAIN (I came home after 2 years in Chile to discover that my CD's were put somewhere and still haven't been found, but they're safe!). So now I make a back-ups in case they're ever lost. Along with that is being able to play about 11 hours off 1 CD, eliminated the need for a CD-Changer. My CD player in my car is getting sort of old, skips a lot and doesn't like some CD-R's I've made, plus, to play MP3's you need a computer to decode the files, so I would need to install one in my car in order to play them so why not use it to play regular CDs too?. And so MP3 OS in my MP3 car was born.
